A vet clinic prep tool and an IT firmware orchestrator both scored 7/10. The similarities end there.
Both of these ideas came in at 7/10. Both are targeting underserved niches. Both have real, documented pain behind them. And somehow, they feel like completely different bets.
Let me explain why.
Procedure Prep Automator (Rule-Based Preps) is a rule-based checklist engine for vet clinics. When an appointment gets booked with "ear pain" as the reason, it fires a prep task to the vet tech: grab the ear swab, set up the cytology kit, get the room ready before the DVM walks in. The 10-15 minutes of recoverable time that currently disappears between appointment confirmation and patient check-in.
BitLocker-Safe Firmware Rollout Orchestrator is what it sounds like. When IT pushes a BIOS update across a Windows fleet, BitLocker has a habit of locking everyone out and flooding the helpdesk with recovery tickets. This tool treats the whole sequence — suspend BitLocker, escrow keys, run firmware update, verify, re-enable — as one atomic transaction with canary rollouts and audit logs.
Both ideas have Reddit threads with real people naming the exact pain. Both have clean paths to first customers. Both are buildable solo in under two months.
So why do they feel so different to me?
Here's the thing about PrepVet: the software is the easy part. The hard part is getting a vet tech to consistently check a phone app during the controlled chaos of a clinic morning. If the tech doesn't use it the first week, the practice manager sees nothing, and you're done.
This isn't a solo-decision SaaS purchase. It's a change management project disguised as a $149/month subscription. And vet tech turnover runs 30-40% annually, which means the trained behavior you fought for resets on a rolling basis. You're not selling software. You're selling a new habit to a workforce that keeps churning.
That's a real problem. Not a fatal one — plenty of successful SaaS products live in this space — but you should go in with your eyes open.
The other thing I keep coming back to is how thin the feature gap actually is. The product insight (trigger prep tasks from appointment reasons) is genuinely good. But ezyVet is owned by IDEXX, a $15B company with existing customer relationships at most of the clinics you'd be targeting. If they decide to ship a "prep task triggers" feature, they don't need to win a competitive evaluation. They just need to add a row to their existing product. A determined product manager at ezyVet could probably ship something good enough to stop a new-entrant sale in a single quarterly cycle.
The counter to this is real though: every PMS vendor is currently racing to build AI SOAP notes and post-exam documentation. Nobody is paying attention to the 15-minute pre-exam window. That's the actual wedge. The question is whether you can get to 100 paying clinics and build a protocol library deep enough that "good enough" from ezyVet still doesn't displace you.
At sub-500 clinics, this is a bootstrappable business with 88% gross margins and a legitimate organic acquisition channel through r/VetTech. I'd want to validate it with the Notion/Airtable approach before writing a line of code — DM 20 practice managers, run a manual simulation for a week, see if three of them will pay $199 for a pilot. The idea says 3/10 converts is success. That's not a crazy bar.
The BitLocker orchestrator pain is more acute, more expensive, and more immediately obvious to buyers. An IT admin who just fielded 200 helpdesk tickets from a single firmware rollout doesn't need to be convinced the problem is real. They lived it yesterday.
The Unfair Insight here is sharp: admins know the manual fix (manage-bde -protectors -disable), but they can't trust it at scale. They'll pay for certainty and an documented audit trail, not just automation. That's a much easier sales conversation.
But the existential risk is real and worth naming directly: this entire product is a workaround for a gap in Microsoft's own tooling. The KB5058379 incident put firmware update safety under genuine executive scrutiny at Microsoft. That's not a small thing. The same pressure that validates the pain is also the pressure that gets it prioritized on Microsoft's own roadmap.
If Microsoft ships native BitLocker-suspend awareness in Intune — and the analysis gives this a 12-18 month window — the core value proposition for IT admins who are already Intune customers just collapses. You can build around this with compliance audit logs, fleet PCR baseline analytics, and MSP channel embedding. But those are defensible features, not a defensible product, and you'd need to move fast.
There's also the security trust problem. A product that touches encryption keys and TPM state for thousands of devices will need SOC2 Type II before most IT admins at regulated organizations will sign off on it. SOC2 as a solo founder takes 6-12 months and real money. The chicken-and-egg is genuine: your target customers won't buy without it, but getting it requires the revenue you don't have yet. I don't have a clean answer to that one.
The high-privilege OAuth scopes (BitLockerKey.Read.All) will also cause friction at enterprise security reviews that's genuinely hard to predict or quantify. Some IT security teams will refuse on principle regardless of the product's merit.
Honestly, if I were a solo dev deciding between these two, I'd probably pick the vet tool.
Not because it's the bigger opportunity — it isn't. The IT tool has a larger SAM and buyers who understand B2B SaaS spending. But the vet tool's risk profile is simpler. The threat is "a PMS vendor ships this feature" and you have some time before that happens. The IT tool's threat is "Microsoft patches a known defect" and the timeline is genuinely opaque.
Both have "vulnerable" survival verdicts. Both need validation before you write serious code. But the vet idea's failure modes feel more legible, and the first customer path (post a Loom in r/VetTech, DM 20 practice managers) is concrete in a way that feels executable this week.
That said, if you have a background in enterprise IT or you're already in a sysadmin community, the BitLocker orchestrator is probably worth exploring. The pain is sharper and the buyers have budget. Just go in knowing that you might be building toward an acquisition rather than a long-term standalone product, and size your investment accordingly.
Neither of these is a slam dunk. The 7/10 scores feel right to me.
